The Valley is defined by a 1,600 km2 basin, bordered by the Muddy Mountains to the east, the Sheep Mountains towards the north, the Black Mountains towards the south and the Spring Mountains to the west.

The names Vegas and Las Vegas are normally utilized to denote the whole region. The names could refer to valley, the strip and the city. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has the right to use the names as a brand.

Due to the present economy, the city of North Las Vegas has been experiencing high unemployment, though future job growth within the city is expected to grow.
